Official SQE2 Structure
SQE2 consists of exactly 16 stations split across oral and written assessments. Note: the Client Interview and Attendance Note together count as one combined station.

⚖️ Negotiation — New from September 2026
From September 2026, every SQE2 sitting must include at least one station involving negotiation. This will not be a separately labelled station — it will be embedded within an existing station type (Client Interview, Case Analysis or Legal Writing). If you are sitting SQE2 before September 2026, this does not apply to your sitting.
Total time: ~8 hours (timed per station, auto-advance)
The Client Interview is marked on skills only. The Attendance Note is marked on both skills and law. Together they form one combined station, with law marks coming solely from the Attendance Note.
Treat every task as a real exam
Work within the time limits from day one. The SQE2 is as much about time management as it is about legal knowledge.
Law and skills are equally weighted
50% of marks are for legal accuracy, 50% for professional skills. Candidates who ignore the skills component consistently underperform.
Spot the hidden ethics issue
Nearly every station contains a professional conduct element. Failing to identify it often costs a grade. Always ask: 'Is there an ethical dimension here?' From September 2026, also look for negotiation elements embedded within stations.
Structure is your best friend
Examiners reward well-organised answers. Use headings, IRAC, and clear paragraphs. A structured C answer often beats an unstructured A answer.
Review model answers critically
After each attempt, compare your answer against the model. Identify which criteria you missed and why — then specifically practise those weaknesses.
Know the practice areas by day
Written Day 1 = Dispute Resolution + Criminal Litigation. Day 2 = Property Practice + Wills & Probate. Day 3 = Business Law & Practice. Oral days cover all five areas. Knowing which area appears on which day helps you focus revision.
